Mt Victoria, 12 November 2020
A great turn out for the last after work rogaine of the year and we lucked out with the weather after a week of down pours. With all checkpoints visited by at least one person. Teams seemed to spread out over the course and concentrate on certain areas, mainly East and North. Some teams had a good go at guessing the answers in other parts of the course! 😂
In the 90minute walk the Blind Leading the Blind managed to navigate their way around to collect 350points.
The Traveling Salesmen and Legs were made for going in Circles both managed to grab 640points within the 90minutes running.
An impressive 1035 points was collected by Bill Edwards in 3hrs walking.
Nick On took out the 3hrs running top spot with 1467points and clocking up just over 25km.
Cheers everyone for turning up and helping with the pizza boxes

Kaukau, 14 October 2020
Well done to you all for participating in the Mt Kaukau Afterwork Rogaine. We were all lucky that the weather stayed dry with only a cold wind to worry about. In designing the course, Gary and Arthur wanted to give the fast rogainers multiple options for routes throughout the 3 hours. We also hoped to give the slower competitors multiple shorter options that were fun, challenging and provided plenty of points!
This seems to have worked for the 3 hour participants while the 90 minute rogainers found time management much harder with more penalty points resulting. Noone seemed too concerned though as the most overdue had the biggest smiles. Thankyou for texting through if you were going to be late. That helps us enormously.
A few notes regarding the checkpoints:
- Every checkpoint was visited at least once - yeah!
- We have allowed a few that claimed #24 or #35 because of the code having become hard to read.
- We have not allowed the (several) claims for #33 as many did correctly get it. The key was to look at where the centre of the circle was placed and it is clearly a short distance away from the road. So those who poked their heads into the bush did find the correct tree and ribbon.
- We also had a claim for #47 that wasn’t accepted. Again careful reading of the map showed that the ribbon could be found on knoll that was SW i.e below the track on a sharp bend in the track.
- For those who struggled to find #61 (pine tree on spur 20m NW from corner), here are a few tips: 1. There are 2 spurs on the track so it is important to first identify the correct spur. Look for key clues on the map such as the track almost doubling back on itself. 2. 20m is actually quite a long way in dense bush so keep going or count your steps - maybe 40 steps. 3. Ensure you go North West!

Skyline, 9 & 10 September 2020
This week’s Rogaine(s), had 225 people registered - fairly evenly split over 3 events, over 2 nights to meet Level2 requirements. Thanks to all those who turned out, especially you crazy keen people on Thursday night in the pouring rain. The significant weather change between the 2 nights meant it really was 2 very separate 3 hour events so results have been kept separate.
All Thursday night teams have been given a bonus 100 points 1. for turning up and 2. for finishing safely and with smiles on most faces!. It was far too wet and windy to make it into the private farm land on Thursday night. The private land Includes controls 70 - 42 - 55 - 31 - 30 and everything else below and to the left of these controls. Ten teams on Wednesday made it as far as control 101.
Excluding the private farm (permission required), the course only has 4 ribbons (3 of which have distinctive location descriptions), so feel free to take the map out and find some controls on a calmer / drier day.
If you had trouble with the below controls:
- Control 60 - ribbon up a stream in Otari - if you needed to go far enough upstream and go through a gap in a fallen tree blocking the stream, the ribbon visible soon after that. The ribbon was found both nights.
- Control 33 - is an old track in otari, they have a wooden barrier to block it off at both ends . Control 53 was also at the top of and old track (not fenced off) about starting about 5-8 meters from the stile.
Thanks to the teams that were running late for texting/calling - it saved a lot of worry for the organisers at the end.
The winning 90 minute running route by team "Babaji and Me" was controls 33, 60, 24, 100, 61, 53, 71, 31, 55, 36, 64, 34, 20 = 610 points.

Belmont, 11 August 2020
Last night’s Rogaine, which, it seems, was just in time to beat level 2. 200 people in 72 teams - what a great turnout.
Where did people go? Well, about half the teams went up to the trig, half made their way through the maze, and about a third went south down Korokoro stream. Of course, most went for the high value close to home controls, including the hut just up from the stream.
I had a few good comments about the easy to see ribbon codes, and the reflectors along some of the tracks. The ribbon codes were made from a $15 safety vest from Mitre 10 - the reflector is quite effective.
There is a lot of detail in that area to squeeze into a 1:16000 map of that area, so hopefully it wasn’t too hard to see what you needed. There was a comment about the logs covering the track just SW of 43 - these were actually added to this map for this Rogaine (the dark green dot), and the bypass bait line track added, but you had to look carefully.
Thanks to the 2 teams that were running more than 15 minutes late for texting - it saved a lot of worry for the organisers at the end.
Claims:
60: 1 claim, 13 found - not accepted
63: 3 claims, 15 found - not accepted (this was a tricky one)
71: 2 claims, 45 found - not accepted (also a bit tricky)
71 was the most visited control with 45 visits (unsurprisingly) with 90 not far behind with 41 visits and 20 with 40 visits.
All controls were visited, 61 was least with 9 visits.
