The Big Trig, 10-12 December 2021

For the 30th anniversary of rogaining in New Zealand, OHV ran a 5-event series of rogaines adding up to 15 hours. And a 15-hour "adventure rogaine" incorporating bike navigation between the foot rogaines. 15 + 15 = 30! Full results are at the Big Trig website.

Ngaio, Kau Kau, & Crows Nest, 18 November 2021

Thanks to the nearly 400 who turned up over two wonderful Wellington evenings for the last afterwork rogaine of the year. It was probably a bit more breezy on Wednesday than Thursday, but overall wonderful conditions for 3 hours (or 90 minutes) on and around the hills. Thanks also for all signing in and wearing masks, social distancing probably meant you didn’t encounter 'The Delta Variants" (Wednesday night, 3 hours running).

Congratulations to Mild Expectations, Sky Blue Serpent Stew and Big Sunday Runs who all topped 1000 points. Special mention also to the elite orienteers of the Out-of-Towners who got 750 points in only 90 minutes. I doubt we could have kept them out for 3 hours. 

Every control was visited - something that is very pleasing to a planner - although 51 and 71, both in the far north-east of the map only had one visit each. The most popular control was 48 (the number of cabbage trees at the end of Kilgour Way) with 86 teams visiting, followed by 35 at the entrance to Nagio Gorge by Crofton Downs station with 79 visits, and the Wellington Beekeepers phone number (control 47) with 75. The only control that seemed to be problematic was the lamp post number at 21. There were at least 7 different answers given to this, 5 of which were given 4 or more times! The feature the control is on is always at the very centre of the circle, and should be on something distinct - in this case the first bend in the path - however, we have been generous and allowed any of the 5 answers that had multiple votes!

Berhampore, 15 - 16 September 2021

Great turn up for the August afterwork rogaine postponed due to lockdown: 288 participants split into 2 waves on the Wednesday and 1 on the Thursday.

Wednesday people had a clear, starry night while the Thursday ones had one of those typical Wellington conditions with wind, cold and rain. A pat on their back and I have to say they all looked happy despite the weather.

All controls have been visited by at least one team. And they have all been found. All claims have not been accepted because the majority of teams who visited found them apart from CP 42 that we have to admit was a tricky one: quite high up on the wall, you had to sort of free climb some bricks to be able to read the inscription ( if you had been able to notice the cross beforehand) Just 9 teams out of 25 got ii: hats off Babbling Brook, Nothing to see here, Konas, Petrel Appreciation Society, Flying Takahes, Mind Tangle, GSD, L2 and Scrambled legs. 37 was another one that has been claimed by some: if you approached it from the South you were going to be stopped by a thick brambleberries wall but going around and approaching it from the North was all good. 58 was apparently hard, too: the fort was quite hidden on the side of the track, let`s say you weren`t going to notice it unless you took a minute to look around. And finally 52 got many different answers because along that beautiful brand new track there are quite a few wooden signs with different track names but inside the circle there is just one and that`s the only answer we have accepted.

We want to thanks all of you for coming along and for complying with the Covid rules and for grabbing the opportunity to go out and explore our backyard, Michael Wood for being a mapper extraordinaire always available for helping us with the map business and Kelvin Thiele for supervising. We had a lot of fun planning this, it was our first experience on the other side and it`s been very interesting to go away from the usual loops and discover so many new places around the block, took us some time but the smiles on your faces yesterday were a big reward for us.

Eastbourne, 29 July 2021

Thank you all for coming along to the Rogaine, we understand the difficulty getting to Eastbourne for a 6:00pm start so we appreciate the good turnout.

We had a few claims and a number of wrong answers. 

The tepee on the beach (control 53) had the most claims and rightfully so.  The tepee we mapped was the biggest on the beach but unbeknown to us this bit of beach and the tepee got washed away in the recent storms. We put the control ribbon in the biggest remaining tepee which wasn’t where the circle on the map was – sorry about that.  There were a few other claims that we have disallowed as the bulk of the teams had the correct answer.

We had a lot of answers that were different from what we expected.     At control 31 we intended the main track junction and not the pest control line junction but they are both near the centre of the circle so we have allowed both answers. The boards on the bridge at control 33 had so many incorrect answers we have allowed them all. I suspect this is because there are so many bridges on the track – knowing the control was near pest control line HH was the secret to finding the right bridge. It appears a lot of teams didn’t take in the hint on the “Read Me now” board that the pest control lines have labels AA southern to SS northern.

All controls were visited, 6 teams made it to the little hut (control 100) -good effort.

The least visited controls were 34 and 92 with only one visit each. The most visited was control 23 with 50 visits, controls 24, 32, and 42 all had 45 visits – we hope you enjoyed the slide down.

If you delve into the attached spreadsheet you can see who visited which controls and where we have deducted/allowed points. There were also a few adding mistakes.

We will leave the control ribbons out until the end of August if anyone wants to have another go at the course.

Over a hundred teams ventured out for a fantasy themed rogaine. A fairy had waved their wand to clear the rain for a lovely moonlight night and for the event to run just before the COVID level change the next day. 

All controls were visited. Only three claims were made (two for 26 and one for 81). These were not accepted as all other teams who visited had the right answer. The low claims is down to pre-testing of the course by Tony Gazley and David Molnar, so all thanks to them. There were very few late returns. Some teams tried interesting off-track routes to cut the distance but ended up bluffed out and retreating. No team visited all the controls but some got close - Bill Edwards missed only 5 controls, No Gear, No Idea missed 4, Jack and the Beanstalk, Foresteer and Andrew Rutherdale missed 3 each and the Red Amoeba Troll Joiner's made it to all but two (22 & 45) and only a minute late. For the top scores in each see the results.

Wilton, 12 May 2021

Record numbers signed up for the 2nd rogaine of the year, this time based from the leafy Ōtari-Wilton's Bush. 88 teams turned out on a wet, cold and windy night with the stream levels up high enough to place 2 controls out of bounds for safety reasons. All controls were visited (except the 2 out of bounds) with 34 the most visited (50 teams), while 54 and 101 were only visited by 3 teams. All claims accepted for control 90 visited by 20 teams (which seems to be extremely well hidden) and control 80 visited by 40 teams (although 11 teams did write the correct answer). A few claims for 71 were rejected as this was found by 13 teams. 

Congratulations to Josh Campbell and Co. on a great score (1450) in the 3hr run with a very close battle for 2/3/4 separated by only 10pts. Greg Thurlow also had a good run (1370) but was pegged back by the solo penalty. Paul Teesdale-Spittle took out the 3hr walk, also taking a solo penalty. Gene Beveridge and Imogene Scott took out the 90min run by some way despite suffering an 80pt late penalty while The Mapper Michael Wood emerged victorious in the 90min walk category. Special mention to PLF (3rd) who were the only team to pick up both 100 pointers.

The rogaine season started on a high, with 202 participants, 75 teams, and a really tough course!

Teams fought steep tracks and gorse-ridden remote terrain in the dark (and a couple of confusing control clues/location, apologies from the planners!). We notice quite a few teams of very young competitors who absolutely smashed it. Some trophies could have been distributed for most impressive leg scratches.

Luckily, everyone came back alive. Ka pai!
