MTBO Sprint Training, 21 Mar 21

Course planner Michael Wood helped by Mia and Jason Brown. 12 riders.

This course in the Hutt river corridor was aimed at the NZ Champs sprint distance, using 4WD tracks and gaps in the riverbank vegetation to tune quick thinking and frequent direction change. The target market was absent, but we're getting adventure racers particularly women!

No overall results as the 50 controls were mostly ribbons, and 8km is more than a sprint anyway, so riders didnt need to do the lot But we had SI boxes before and after four specially tricky bits.

  • The 4WD maze under the Melling Bridge: Mark Malone 8:31, Glen Warner 9:12,  Jen Thornburrow and friends 13:18. This is insanely complex! Pure riding time by the planner 5min.
  • The vegetation maze near Alicetown: Kelly Field and friends 5:43, Jen 6:09, Glen 6:13, Mark 7:32, Gavin Scott 13:53. More straightforward as the clumps are surrounded by mowed grass and its flat.
  • The overgrown riverside trails near HV High School: Glen 6:55, Kelly 10:39. Choosing the short overgrown route or getting out onto the river trail and coming back in.
  • The humps and bumps near the former croquet green: Glen 10:13, Mark 10:39, Gavin 15:22. Included some nice mowed areas among the willows. Pure riding time by the planner 7min.

Others taking part were Bridget Burt, Chantelle Taylor, Janice Kang and friend, Donna Burling, and Francis Gatus

The Baring Reprise, 14 Feb 21

Course planner Michael Wood  11  riders.

Baring Breeze re-run (re-Breeze, geddit?) with the addition of a 1km foot stage round the lighthouse cottages on a new map. Practice for the NZ Champs Middle, which will be on similar trackless ridable firm smooth pasture.

No results. Some riders used MapRunF, search in the results for "Baring Head Main" which is set up as an any-order event.  And look for 2021, as last year's results are there too. Participants, in no particular order:

  • Glen Warner
  • Mark Malone
  • Mary McBride
  • Jenny Cassie
  • Claire/Rich/Hazel Ford
  • Sharyn/Logan Mitchell
  • Blake Hone
  • Michael Wood

Sprint Adventure Race Chapter Five, 22 Nov 20

Course planner Michael Wood

Hutt River corridor from Totara Park to Birchville Bridge. Inauspicious start to the day with southerly change, but only a few brief showers and we saw the sun!  34 people, including (as invited) some who did the foot sections only and one who ran the  whole 10km bike section. The foot sections of 1km each were at Harcourt Park, Birchville School, California Park, and the river bend at Maoribank.

Nicholas Green and AJ Prichard won but they didn't have things all their own way, with Jonathan Green (2nd overall) taking the nicest stage including some mature native forest next to Birchville School. The top 5 places were taken by junior orienteers.

Results have been posted. The maps have been added to the Virtual Course list on our Anytime Orienteering page.

Wainui Trail Park, 13 Sep 20

Course planner Michael Wood. 30 Riders.

A nice day on some great tracks. The cellphone system had rather too many glitches, maybe last year we were just lucky. It might be something we have to keep to farmland and urban events until GPS's get better. They dont work well in bush and steep valleys and some places today had both.

But I hope you can see past the scoring system to  the riding/navigational challenge, and for those on the score course the choice of what to attempt and in what order. Thanks to years of track-builders, and the Hutt City for materials and resources.

Provisional Adjusted Results. This is based on my interpretation of your tracks as on the MapRun website. Let me know if I jumped to any wrong conclusions or have the teams wrong.

Score Course. Any order 60 minutes

Unlike the app we use 10pts/min for lateness. Here are our corrected results. Link here to the MapRun results including tracks.  To see the tracks you may have to put in the code 3883.

There is a "review" function in MapRun which is like putting in a claim when your GPS fails to register. This creates a revised result which the organiser can accept or reject. You can see some of these "rev" results from today.

  1. John Robertson 760
  2. Nicola Mitchell 720
  3. Nicholas and Joel Green 730 -10L =720
  4. Clinton Ryan and Demelza Topp 680 -10L = 670 (Score but not track uploaded for some reason so can't check. Data switched off? Haven't got an answer to this.)
  5. Mike Fee 650
  6. Jenny Visser 600 -10L =590 (think you prob visited #70:-))
  7. Alan Teesdale Ollie Taylor 450 (think you prob visited #10, 32 and 34)
  8. Brian Stewart Cellphone only picked up position occasionally. Usu this is the phone trying to "optimse" battery use by going to sleep, you have to find the setting and disable it so the GPS can talk to the app continuously)

Hikoikoi B-Max, 14 Jun 20

Course planner Michael Wood. 11 Riders.

Good to be back with events in Level 1 on a sunny day. This was one of the first in the country, making use of MTBO courses at Hokoikoi Reserve run a few years ago and available with either MapRun tracking or honesty. There was a 1km C1 designed for the trainer-wheel brigade but we didn't have any of those. That led straight into a 2km C2 and if I may say so this was quite good sprint terrain. But most people did the 5km C3 which went as far as Sladden Park with some tight zigzagging where the terrain allowed. (My favourite - a boardwalk above either the tide or mudflats and only just wide enough to do the turns!)

C1 and/or C2

  1. Barbara Bridger (on foot) 46:19
  2. Jen Thornburrow Katie Bramley, Bridget Burt Not Rcded
  3. Sophie and Dene Waters No Rcded

C3

  1. Ben Mitchell 21:34
  2. Nicola Mitchell 26:34
  3. William Power 27:30
  4. Ali Power 29:20
  5. Sophie and Dene Waters 33:59
  6. Sarah Underwood 37:33
  7. Janice Kang 1:46:31
  8. Jen Thornburrow Katie Bramley, Bridget Burt Not Rcded

Most of the times are on the MapRun website here. And if you click on "track" you'll see where the person went. Don't be alarmed at some of the crazy spikes in the tracks - this is the app "going to sleep" and we have advice on how to stop it - its the phone trying to save battery. Depending on the phone you set the app so that in runs in the background; or in the battery settings you switch off battery save for this app. And the occasional missed beep due to GPS inaccuracy is dealt with in the "review" process at the end of the course. One final thing - the latest app version is called MapRunF.

The Baring Breeze, 15 Mar 20

Course planner Michael Wood. 43 riders.

Great day at Baring Head today with perfect weather conditions! Two courses to provide experience for new and those with nav experience, including a rarity for MTBO of cross-country travel towards a point feature! We welcomed 43 riders from world-class to "normal" orienteers, adventure racers from Godzone level to secondary school, and of course mountain-bikers.

And some more testing of the cellphone app MapRun, though it seemed that the weak signal made it only register visits sometimes. We'll need to do more testing to establish the conditions under which it will work - and its always going to be dependant on your cellphone type and age. I can see four rides that have made it back onto the server - if you used the app please try and upload now you're home, the data is probably still on your phone.

To show the potential, anyone can visit the MapRun website and choose "Leaderboard Quick Link". In the filter box type "Baring" and follow thru to "Baring Breeze Main". You'll see a table of successful uploads. Be aware that I gave the app EVERY control to save time on my part, so riders may have scored controls on the other course.

Try clicking on "Track" - those who use the RouteGadget website will recognise this. I can see where you actually went, and you can see the route I took to put out the ribbons. Imagine if everyone was on the app!! Apart from taking in the ribbons, the course can be done at any time.

But never mind the fancy stuff, the important thing was, did you have a good ride and perhaps learn some new skills? See you next time.

Sprint Adventure Race Chapter 4, 06 Feb 20

Course planner Michael Wood assisted by Kieran and Oliver Edwards.

Hutt River corridor from Moonshine to Totara Park Bridge. Fine day. 71 people, many from Onslow College Adventure Racing squad.

This one was grandly called a "Sprint Adventure Race" because a real one is MUCH tougher. But it involved teams, navigation, and different modes of transport - mountainbike and foot. And water travel by dint of crossing the Whakatiki River. As with earlier ones this used both sides of the Hutt River, and this held the best variety yet.

Nicholas and Joel Green won by a substantial margin but all 71 had fun. Results have been posted.

For questions about the results consult the course planner or series coordinators, for questions about the page consult Michael Wood.
